Women's Basketball Wins Big in Season Debut Over Vikings

The Cecil College women's basketball team opened their 2019-2020 season with a 30-point victory over non-conference and non-region opponent, Mercer County Community College, on Thursday. The Seahawks were lifted to 1-0 after defeating the Vikings 97-67 in their season and home opener.

The Seahawks were first on the scoreboard at the 9:27 mark in the first quarter when sophomore guard Shania Gales grabbed an offensive rebound and put back, while also being fouled. She covered the lay up and free throw to give Cecil College a 3-0 lead in the opening seconds of the contest.

The Vikings trailed close behind for much of the first half until the Seahawks tallied ten unanswered points to head into the locker room with a 50-38 lead. Cecil's offense stayed hot and found themselves with their largest lead of 34 points about halfway into the fourth quarter, which eventually sealed the deal on a 97-67 victory.

The Seahawks shot an impressive 50.7% from the floor while racking up 57 rebounds and 23 assists as a team, compared to the Vikings 29.3% shot percentage. Freshman guard Jayla Smith recorded a double-double with 31 points and 13 rebounds in her first game as a Seahawk, while returning guard Kayla Thompson tallied 18 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Other Seahawks' in double-digit scoring including Shania Gales, Taniece Redden, and Haley Krone while Destiny Perry and Trinity Wailes added a combined 13 points. Perry also added eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and a block.

Cecil College women's basketball will return to action on Wednesday, November 20 at 5:00 p.m. when they host the Titans of Beaver Community College for a non-conference and non-region contest.
