Total Team Effort: Cardinals Dominate Montgomery in 13-1 Blowout

In what can best be described as the performance of the year, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals softball team smashed Montgomery College 13-1 in five innings on Wednesday to get above .500 for the first time this year.

After building up a six-run lead in the first three innings, the Cardinals scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure their second straight victory.

Catonsville made a statement in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Brooks (Hammond) smashed a home run out of the park for a grand slam, making it 4-0. Brooks would be instrumental in building the Cardinals lead, as she singled in the bottom of the third to bring sophomore outfielder Abigail Heagy (Eastern Tech) home, then scored herself to make it 6-0.

Montgomery got a run on the board in the top of the fourth, but any chance of a comeback was dissipated in the bottom of the fourth. After freshman catcher Caelyn Voss (Catonsville) doubled to right field, freshman outfielder Mimi Truong (Western Tech) nearly hit an inside-the-park home run. While Truong was caught out at home plate, the crazy play set the tone for the inning. Another double from sophomore shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard) led to a flurry of runs from the Cardinals. Heagy advanced to first on an error, allowing Gross to score. A single from Brooks brought Heagy home, and after the Cardinals loaded the bases, a walk scored another run. The onslaught continued as freshman second baseman Katie Weaver (Eastern Tech) brought home two more runs with a single. The final run of the inning came from freshman second baseman Madelyn Golt (George Washington Carver) scoring on a passed ball.

The stat line from this game is something out of legend. Five of Catonsville's nine batters scored RBIs, with Weaver bringing home two and Brooks scoring five. Brooks added a home run, while Heagy had an RBI and a triple. Voss had a breakout performance with two doubles, while four Cardinal batters scored extra-base hits.
