UCC Baseball Falls in Season Opener to Anne Arundel, 7-6

ARNOLD, MD – The UCC Owls baseball team opened the season with a hard-fought 7-6 defeat at Anne Arundel Community College in five innings.

The Owls (0-1, 0-0) jumped out to an early three-run lead, but the Riverhawks responded with four runs of their own in the third inning to tie the game. AACC (4-6, 1-1) would then tack on three more runs to extend their lead to 6-3. UCC would not go down without a fight, as they tied the game at six in the top of the final frame. However, they were able to hold off the Anne Arundel, as the Riverhawks walked it off in the bottom of the fifth with a single.

Calvin Colon started the season on the right foot for the Owls. The sophomore infielder slugged in 3 RBIs in the defeat. Patrick Connolly caught a good game but also contributed a multi-hit performance, including a RBI single. Christian Castro also reached base twice in the game.

The Owls sent four pitchers to the mound with Jovon Portuondo getting the opening day start. Jayden Jacobs, Jesus Lares, and Kevin Roll also saw action on the hill today.

The Owls will head a little further south tomorrow on their spring break road trip. UCC is scheduled for six games over the next four days, as the team heads down to warmer weather in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Owls will face a familiar foe tomorrow when they take on fellow Region XIX member Rowan College at Burlington County. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
