Cardinals fall to Harcum in second meeting of the season

The Cardinals women's basketball team could not get their revenge as they dropped their second game to Harcum this season 94-74.

The Bears have had a dominant 2022-2023 season thus far, with a 12-1 record they are looking to enter the top 20 NJCAA division two rankings.

Continuing her impressive season, Harcum sophomore guard Amaris Baker put up an astonishing 32 points and 11 rebounds against the Cardinals on Saturday. Freshman guard Ellie Janssen-Holton also dominated the floor, recording 32 points and four assists on the night.

The Cardinals team put up a good fight with four of their five starters scoring in double digits, sophomore guard/forward Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy and freshman center/forward Jocelyn Fogle putting up 14 and 12 points respectively.

This game was very different from their first meeting this year. In the first game of the season, the Cardinals kept it close with the Bears, leading at the end of the first three quarters, but losing at the very last seconds of the fourth. On Saturday, the Bears seemed destined to not let the Cardinals beat them. Despite it being just a nine-point game at the end of the first quarter, the Bear's defense held Catonsville to just nine points in the second quarter, leading the game 51-27 at the halftime break.

Catonsville would continue to fight for the remainder of the game, even outscoring Harcum 29-16 in the final period. Freshman guard Ahna Thomas (Bowie) continued her impressive play, recording a double-double on the night with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Lauryn Russell (Pallotti) coming off the bench scored ten points and provided seven assists.

The lead the Bears took in the first half proved too much to come back from for the Cardinals and the game would end 94-74, a night and day difference from the 71-67 score line we saw earlier in the season.

The Cardinals women look to bounce back from Saturday's loss as they host the Hagerstown Community College Hawks Thursday at 5pm here in Catonsville.
