CCBC Essex powers past Potomac State women

Essex, Md. – Jalynn Montgomery scored a season high 30 points, but it wasn't enough as the WVU Potomac Sate College women fell to CCBC Essex 100-71 Saturday afternoon at Essex in their Region XX Division II match up.

Essex ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Division II national poll, opened the game on a 15-2 tear fueled by a trifecta of three-point field goals and three Potomac State turnovers. The Catamounts responded with three-point shooting of their own, including one trey each from Montgomery and Erica Merrill in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter, to close the gap to four at 20-16.

In the second quarter the Knights again stretched their lead, 32-19 at the 6:58 mark, only to see the Catamounts narrow the margin. Entering halftime Essex held a slim 43-38 lead.

The third quarter would prove to be the difference. Essex forced Potomac State into 10 turnovers in the third period and doubled up the Catamounts scoring 24 points while holding PSC to 12 points. The score stood at 67-50 entering the final period.

The Knights coasted in the fourth quarter, closing out the 100-71 victory.

Montgomery's game-high 30 points included 8-15 field goal shooting, 1-4 from three-point range, and 13-16 from the free throw line. Alexis Turner joined Montgomery as the only Catamounts in double figures with 12 points. She also had a game-high 9 rebounds.

CCBC Essex was led by Mya Moye with 27 points including 9-24 from the field, 3-12 three pointers and 6-6 from the foul line. Kobie Scott-Pearson had 15 points and La'Mya Ford 12 points to also reach double figures for Essex.

The loss drops Potomac State's record to 2-4 on the season. They'll face Region XX and WPCC opponent Westmoreland CCC Thursday, Dec. 12 at 5:00 p.m. at home in Lough Gymnasium.
