He has been the leader of the Frederick Community College Cougars baseball team for over two decades, entering his 22nd season as the head coach. Bennett also served as the director of athletics from 2014 to 2019. During that time, he started the FCC Athletics Hall of Fame. Coach Bennett was recently inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Hall of Fame in the Class of 2023.

His teams have made 20 straight trips to the NJCAA Region 20 tournament, six to the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series, and 13 Region Championship Final appearances. They've collected eight Region titles, six District championships, and four Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO) championships. His team has been nationally ranked for 22 consecutive years, and he has accumulated over 750 wins as head coach.

"I'm humbled and honored with the task of leading the athletic department today and into the future. I'm a student-athlete and coach-centered leader, and we as a department will always support the mission of the College," Bennett said about approaching his new role as director of athletics.

Dr. Benita Rashaw, interim vice president for student affairs, said, "I am happy to officially welcome Rodney as the director of athletics, having served in the interim role over the last several months. Rodney's commitment to FCC is unwavering." Dr. Rashaw expressed, "I am excited about the opportunity for him to lead with renewed dedication, ensuring our student-athletes continue to excel both in their sport and academically."

Bennett's duties as director of athletics will include overseeing seven athletic programs and their facilities, working alongside and managing the coaching staff, overseeing budgeting, ensuring compliance and eligibility requirements are met, and fostering student-athlete development, including engaging with a student-athlete advisory board.

Bennett has high expectations for himself and his staff, "FCC has been near and dear to my heart for 20 years, and with that passion, along with determination and hard work, we will strive to be one of the best athletic departments in the state, region, and nation."
