Workman Dominates For The Owls As Prince George’s Edges Beaver County 77-75

Prince George's women's basketball returned to Novak Field House on Sunday morning, February 16th to take on the Community College of Beaver County Titans in the Owls final home game of the 2019-2020 season. Entering the contest with only five healthy players, the Owls faced a tough challenge of having to play without any rest the entire game. Prince George's was able to slow the game down and catch their breath by continually forcing their way to the line as the Owls had 25 free throw attempts by the final whistle which capped off a tight 77-75 win for the Owls. The victory improved the Owls overall record to 11-12, including 3-8 in Maryland JUCO play.

The Owls first came out slow as they were only able to put up 12 points in the first quarter compared to the Titans 18 as Prince George's trailed entering the second period looking to turn things around. The Owls found success in the next ten minutes as they doubled their total from the first period to add 24 more points as they took a 36-31 lead heading into halftime. Owls freshman Trinity Workman controlled the tempo during the second period, as she scored more points herself (15) than the Titans team as a whole were able to score the entire quarter (13). Workman entered the break with 20 total points while adding 2 rebounds.

Prince George's put together a 9-0 run during the third period to grow their lead to 15 with 4:33 remaining as they went up 51-36. The Owls then let up and found themselves wondering what happened to their double digit lead by the end of the period as the Titans had scored 11 unanswered points to cut the Owls lead to just 4 by the end of the quarter. The Titans continued to pressure the Owls as they stole the lead from Prince George's who now trailed 69-67 with 2:48 remaining, marking the first time the Owls were playing from behind since the second period. In a back and forth final three minutes, the play that ended up proving to be the difference maker in the final score was a Kori People steal with 2:10 left which resulted in a Chiquitta Kelly layup for the Owls who were able to regain a slim 2 point lead to go back in front, 71-69. Prince George's responded with a basket of their own after each Beaver County bucket over the closing minutes before Kelly hit the last shot of the contest, another made layup with 7 seconds remaining to give the Owls a 77-75 victory.

Workman finished as the top scorer of the game as she recorded a career-high 36 points, 15 of which came from the free throw line. People recorded her second straight and 6th overall double-double of the year in the win with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly just missed out on a double-double in her 17 point, 9 rebound performance. The Owls hit the road tomorrow, February 17th to take on Hagerstown Community College in the final regular season game of the year. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 pm.
