Cardinals Unable to Outscore Rowan

In a back-and-forth shootout, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals softball team lost a close one to Rowan College of South Jersey-Cumberland.

Despite leading for most of the contest, the Cardinals allowed four runs in the top of the seventh, leading to the 10-9 final score.

Catonsville opened the game with a 2-1 lead over the Dukes, extending their lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the third. Cumberland tightened things up in the top of the fourth, adding another run to make it 3-2.

The second half of the game turned into a shootout as both teams exchanged runs left and right. After Cumberland scored three straight to take a 5-3 lead, Catonsville responded with three runs of their own, making it 6-5. Cumberland tied the game at 6-6 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Cardinals immediately responded with another three-run bottom inning to take a 9-6 lead.

The top of the seventh saw the game escape the Cardinals as the Dukes scored four unanswered runs to take a 10-9 lead. Catonsville could not mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, dropping a winnable game.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals still had some impressive performances. Sophomore outfielder Abigail Heagy (Eastern Tech) led the way for the Cardinals with a double, a triple, a home run, and four RBIs. Freshman third baseman Tori Bache (Northeast) added a double, a home run, and four RBIs. Freshman shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard) contributed with two doubles.
