Six-game Win Streak as the Cougars Sit 8th in Most Recent NJCAA Ranking
The Frederick Cougars baseball team is three weeks into their 2023 season, holds a record of 10-3 overall, is currently on a 6-game win streak, and is ranked 8th in the most recent NJCAA DII Baseball Rankings.
The Cougars' most recent wins came against Region 20 opponents Allegany College of Maryland, where the team swept them 7-6 in game one and 11-9 in game two on Thursday. A credit to Frederick's success has come both offensively and defensively.
The Cougars' pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.47, second best in the region, averaging one strikeout per inning and giving up the second least amount of hits to their opponents. Sophomore Jordan Trunnell has led the way for the pitchers getting the start in three games and pitched 13 innings, winning all three of those starts, allowing eight hits while striking out 17 batters. Freshman Dakota Smith follows closely behind his teammate with just as many starts and 11.1 innings pitched, with ten hits and nine strikeouts. Chris Durkin follows up closely with two starts, 11 innings pitched, with six hits and ten strikeouts.
The Cougar's line-up is deep. Aidan Masters leads the team in hitting with players that have played in all 13 games so far with a .439 average, 15 RBIs, 18 hits, and an on-base percentage of .509. Aidan Greaney has three homeruns on the season, eight runs scored, and 13 RBIs for FCC, while Josh Wilson follows up with two homeruns, two triples, and two doubles on 13 hits. When he is not pitching or just coming off the mound the day before, freshman Nick Keane is a solid lead-off hitter with 31 plate appearances and getting a hit 16 times to record a batting average of .516.
When the pitching is working for Frederick, so are the bats. The Cougars have the most robust hitting percentage (.335) and the highest on-base percentage (.437) in the region. Frederick's hitting percentage is good enough for the 12th best in the country, and they hold their opponents' Batting Average Against to .227, good enough for 9th in the country.
Next up: Cougars host College of Southern Maryland for a twin bill Saturday, March 18, starting at noon.
