Hawks shock Riverhawks with 2-1 win

Hawks shock Riverhawks with 2-1 win

Hagerstown Women's Soccer hosted Anne Arundel Community College yesterday afternoon in the first conference match of the season. The Hawks, (3-0-0), mounted offensive pressure on the Riverhawks from the opening whistle. In the ninth minute, a forced a turnover became an opportunity for Kayda Shives (4) to find Kadenn Martin (34) for the first goal of the match. Continued pressure by the Hawks opened up an opportunity for Martin to score again, unassisted, in the thirty-fifth minute. Anne Arundel answered on an unassisted goal by Riverhawk, Makenzie Boyd, at the thirty-seventh minute mark, but the half ended with the Hawks up 2-1.

The second half proved to be a defensive battle with both teams struggling to find scoring opportunites. Kirstin Eichelberger (10) lead the defense in shutting down the Riverhawks attack on goal, and goalkeeper, Madison Ellis (25) chalked up three saves to maintain a clean sheet so far on the season. "The team played hard and it was a good win," stated Coach Clifton Williams. "We had many scoring opportunities and need to find more ways to put the ball in the net, but as we play more games and begin to gel together, the scoring will come. This was a great accomplishment for HCC Women's Soccer."

Hagerstown hosts Garrett College at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5th. To follow Hawks Women's Soccer visit https://athletics.hagerstowncc.edu/sports/wsoc/index.
