Region 20 Celebrates All-Academic Honorees

Charlotte, NC– The National Junior College Athletic Association recognized the highest achievers in the classroom with their recent announcement of the 2022-2023 NJCAA All-Academic Team and Academic Teams of the Year. To be eligible for an All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.60 or higher for the 2022-23 academic year. There are three All-Academic teams:

            NJCAA All-Academic First Team: 4.00 GPA

            NJCAA All-Academic Second Team: 3.80 – 3.99 GPA

            NJCAA All-Academic Third Team: 3.60 – 3.79 GPA.

Student-athletes must also meet certain credit accumulation criteria to be eligible.

Across the membership, 245 Region 20 student-athletes were honored on an All-Academic Team. Of the 24 member institutions in Region 20, 19 had student-athlete representatives on a team. WVU Potomac State had the most student-athletes earn the recognition with 39. Close behind was Harford Community College with 35. Anne Arundel Community College and Montgomery College had over 20 honorees with 29 and 25 respectively. Institutions with more than 10 individuals on an All-Academic Team included: Butler County (12), Carroll Community College (11), Pennsylvania Highlands (11), Cecil College (10), and Garrett College (10). Allegany College, CCBC Catonsville, CCBC Dundalk, CCBC Essex, Chesapeake College, College of Southern Maryland, Frederick Community College, Hagerstown Community College, Howard Community College, and Prince George's Community College each had honorees.

The makeup of the 245 individual honorees was; 64 First Team, 72 Second Team, and 109 Third Team All-Academic. These numbers include student-athletes who participated in multiple sports and qualified for each sport.

In addition to individual honors, the NJCAA recognized team achievements. Eligibility for Academic Team of the Year requires obtaining a team GPA of 3.00 or higher, which includes all of the student-athletes on the sports roster for the 2022-23 year.

Five Region 20 member institutions had at least one team earn Academic Team of the Year honors. WVU Potomac State had the most teams be recognized for the award with six. Anne Arundel and Harford each had five teams accomplish a 3.00 GPA or higher. Butler County Community College's women's basketball and volleyball team's each earned the recognition, as did Cecil College's volleyball program.

Congratulations to the student-athletes, teams, coaches, and staff for the tremendous accomplishments in the classroom during the 2022-23 academic year.
