Region 20 Names October Players of the Month

ARNOLD, MD -- NJCAA Region 20 has announced the Players of the Month for games played in October, 2022. Ten student-athletes from five member institutions were honored.

 

Men's Soccer

Division I
Andres Javitt, Montgomery 

In seven games, Javitt scored six goals and contributed three assists. He scored the game winning goal in the Region 20 DI Championship game. In the NJCAA East District Tournament, he was involved in all four goals in the semifinal win over Monroe CC with two goals, an assist, and winning a free kick that resulted in the fourth goal. In the East District Final, he scored two goals, including the game-winner to defeat #1 ranked Monroe College, securing an automatic bid for the Raptors in the Men's DI Soccer Championship.

 

Division II
Robin Schulze, CCBC Essex

Schulze backstopped Essex to a 6-0 record in October with five shutouts. The keeper made 20 saves and allowed just one goal goal in 540 minutes between the pipes in October, totaling an 0.17 goals against average and a save percentage of .952. Schulze made six saves in the Region 20 semifinals, a shutout victory, and 6 save shutout in regional semifinals win and four saves in the Region 20 Championship victory over Frederick. 

 

Division III
Leyton Calzado, AACC

Calzado scored four goals in October, three of which were game-winners. The forward scored the lone goal in a win against Potomac State on October 9 to kick off a five-game win streak by the Riverhawks. Also scored the game-winning goal against Allegany in the Region 20 semifinals, setting up AACC for back-to-back Region and District titles. 

 

Women's Soccer

Division I
Madelyn Guerra, Montgomery

Guerra returned from injury to start her season on October 6, and went right to work scoring eight goals and assisting another in the seven remaining matches of the month. She had three multiple-goal games, highlighted by a hat trick at Frederick on October 17. With Guerra in the lineup, the Raptors increased their offensive production by 150%.

 

Division II
Reagan Cantner, CCBC Essex

Cantner allowed just three goals in 546:16 between the pipes in October, backstopping the team to a 6-0 record and the Region 20 title. The freshman made 22 saves with four shutouts, and boasted an 0.49 goals against average to go with a .880 save percentage. Cantner made four saves in the Knights' overtime win over Howard in the Region 20 semifinals. 

 

Division III
Cassidy Smith, AACC

Smith had a goal and three assists in four games in October. She assisted AACC's game-winning goal in overtime in the District championship at Suffolk on October 29 to send the Riverhawks back to the NJCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. Scored a goal and added an assist in a one-goal loss to Potomac State on October 9, and played 88 minutes against nationally-ranked Division II CCBC Essex, where AACC narrowly lost, 2-0.

Division I

Division II
Helen Federline, Montgomery

Federline shined in the Region 20 tournament recording 20 kills, 14 service aces, and 23 digs in two matches as the Raptors claimed the Region 20 title. The All-Tournament Team honoree recorded 10 of her service aces in the Region 20 finals and had a standout match earlier in the month against NOVA recording 13 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. For October, Federline averaged 2.52 kills per set with a .284 hitting percentage. She totaled 31 aces in 33 sets played and accounted for a team-high 3.6 points per set. 

Division III
Morgan Jack, Butler County

Broke BC3's career assists record with her 1,361st career assist during the month of October which also saw the Pioneers win their fourth-straight Region 20 title. Jack averaged 10.36 assists per set during the month, adding a 2.60 digs per set. The Pioneers closed out the regular season and cruised through the Region tournament without giving up a single set. Jack was named the tournament MVP.

Men's Cross Country (All Divisions)

Kevin Baranoski, CCBC Essex

Baranoski won the combined D1/D2 Region 20 Championship meet by 51 seconds with a time of 26:41 after not competing since Paul Short Run on September 30th. He helped pace another team member the first half of the race who ended up finishing second in the division and fourth overall. Baranoski led the team to second straight Region 20 title and the Maryland JUCO title. 

Women's Cross Country (All Divisions)

Nicole Puhek, Northern Virginia

Puhek started October with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA D2 Bowie State Classic. She finished 24th at the NCAA D3 Marymount Derby. At the NJCAA Region 20 meet, she placed fourth with a new personal best time of 22:22.70, which was the eighth fastest time in program history.
